The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is one of India’s most transformative infrastructure projects, that is designed to ease the pressure on Mumbai’s saturated aviation system and unlock unprecedented economic acceleration across the Navi Mumbai, Raigad, and MMR growth belt.
With world-class engineering, multimodal connectivity, and a scale 2.5× larger than Mumbai’s current CSMIA, NMIA is not just an airport, it is the nucleus of a new economic geography.
About Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA)
NMIA is a greenfield, multi-runway airport being developed in phases by Adani Airports Holdings Ltd., with CIDCO as the planning authority. It is envisioned as India’s next premier aviation hub, integrating passengers, cargo, logistics, retail, and transit systems into a seamless experience.

Addressing capacity constraints: NMIA was conceived as a long-term solution to relieve congestion at Mumbai’s landlocked CSMIA, which has been operating beyond its designed capacity.
Three-decade journey: The airport was first proposed in the 1990s, reflecting the region’s early recognition of the need for a second major aviation hub.
Policy to execution: Official approvals came in 2007, followed by structured land acquisition and groundwork formalisation in 2018.
Execution acceleration: In 2021, the Adani Group became the project concessionaire, significantly speeding up construction and delivery timelines.
Operational rollout: Phase 1, comprising the first runway and Terminal 1, neared completion in 2024–25, with phased flight operations scheduled to begin from December 2025.
Long-term impact: As a greenfield airport, NMIA is designed to decongest Mumbai’s aviation system while catalysing economic growth across the wider MMR.
NMIA has been in planning for over 30 years, making it one of India’s longest-conceived infrastructure projects.
Airport Scale & Capabilities (Phase 1 & 2)

Comparison Table: Phase 1 vs Phase 2 (NMIA)
Capability | Phase 1 | Phase II |
Passenger Capacity | 10 million/year passengers | 90 million/year passengers |
Runways | 1 runway | 2 runways |
Terminals | 1 terminal | 4 terminals |
Cargo Handling | 1 million tonnes of cargo | 2+ million tonnes of cargo |
Airport to Airport Metro Connectivity (Metro Line 8) | Approved (India’s first Airport-to-Airport Line) | Fully Operational |
Navi Mumbai International Airport is over 55% larger than CSMIA, making it not just a relief airport but the foundation of a fully planned aviation-led economic city

Key Takeaways: What Phase 1 Means for Passengers & Investors
From 25 December 2025, NMIA becomes operational with real, bookable flights to many major Indian cities via IndiGo and Akasa Air, a milestone after almost years of planning.
The airport begins with a single runway and one terminal, but already delivers direct connectivity to 16+ destinations, effectively decongesting Mumbai’s primary airport.
Early operations include 23 daily departures in a limited 12-hour window, but the blueprint suggests rapid scaling, more flights, extended times, and additional infrastructure as demand grows.
